Rose and Epsom salt face scrub

Hey guys. I’ve been having a bit of a spot breakout lately and really needed something to help clear up my face. So as a bit of an impulse I hopped up off the couch to make something refreshing and cleansing for my skin. After a rummage through the garden I found an almost wilting rose head, and so I took some of the petals. Then, I found some lavender and put ’em together. Both are anti-inflammatories and help to combat acne. The lime juice is antibacterial, an astringent and removes dead skin. Putting in the Epsom salts made this bad boy mix into a scrub! Hope you enjoy.


  • a handful of rose petals or 1/2 tsp rosewater
  • 2 tbsp fresh lavender
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp Epsom saltsDSCN3692

(I made enough for 1 use, so there is less of the ingredients in the picture)


  1. Crush the rose petals and lavender up in a mortar and pestle until it becomes a bit mushy, and the juices have run out
  2. Add the lime juice, continue to crush the mixture
  3. Pour in the Epsom salts, and add to a jar/tub to store
  4. After splashing your face with warm water, apply the scrub with your hands or with a cotton pad, until your skin is covered
  5. Wash off with warm water, and close your pores with a splash of cold water

Best ever Bolognese

BologneseHere’s my take on the family favourite. Cooking is one of my passions, and I really love to chop and change recipes to make them more exciting. So, wooden spoon and sharp knives at the ready!


  • 500g lean mince (preferably less than 5% fat)
  • 200g dry spaghetti (plus enough boiling water to cover)
  • 8 mushrooms
  • A few bay leaves to garnish
  • Some parmesan to garnish
  • A handful of baby plum tomatoes
  • 1 large tomato
  • 1-2 sprays of Frylight (1 calorie cooking spray)
  • 2 shallots
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worchester sauce
  • 1/2 tsp creole spices mix
  • 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp cottage cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic butter
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 2 tsp basil
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp passata
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp jalapeno relish
  • Salt and pepper to season


  1. Chop up the vegetables and squish the garlic with the side of a knife (releases flavour better than when chopped)
  2. Spray a pan over medium heat with the frylight
  3. Add the pasta to a pot, pour over boiling water and cook on a medium heat
  4. Add the veg (not the large tomato) to the pan and fry off until lightly golden
  5. Add 1tsp oregano, basil and 1/2tsp paprika, creole spice mix to the veg
  6. Crumble the mince into the pan and cook until brown
  7. Season the mixture
  8. Add the balsamic vinegar, oyster sauce, Worchester sauce, olive oil, cottage cheese, and garlic butter, cook for two minutes
  9. Pour in the passata, ketchup, jalapeno relish and the remaining oregano and basil.
  10. Once everything is combined, take the meat mixture off the heat and drain the pasta
  11. Divide the pasta into two bowls, then divide the meat mixture into two servings
  12. Sprinkle some parmesan over the bolognese, and garnish with a bay leaf
  13. Enjoy the best bolognese you will ever have 😉

Tea tree, peppermint and apple hair soak

hhairrrrnHey guys 🙂 To end the trio of recipes from Fiann O’Nuallain’s book, ‘The Holistic Gardener: Beauty Treatments from the Garden’ (the other two are here and hereee). As a big fan of his wonderful recipes, I found this one while reading about greasy hair in the book, it’s on page 56. Apple cider vinegar cleans hair and removes build-up, tea tree is an antiseptic, and peppermint oil relieves irritation and cleanses. This recipe is good if your hair gets greasy often (mine does in this dreaded summer humidity!) and is quite powerful, so it is not advised for dry or damaged hair. I added chamomile tea to the recipe for it’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and lemon to add some freshness. So let’s get into it, shall we?


  • 2 tbsp Apple Cider VinegarDSCN3504
  • 1 capsule of Peppermint oil
  • 10 shakes of Tea Tree oil
  • 1 chamomile tea bag soaked in hot water (100mls)
  • A squirt of lemon juice


  1. Add the two oils to the vinegar in a bowl
  2. Mix the ingredients until combined (some of the oil will not mix, but that’s okay). Pour in the tea and lemon juice
  3. Apply to your hair while damp, and rub into your scalp in circular motions
  4. Wash with shampoo and hot water to remove the oils                                                             (it may take up to 2 washes to get rid of the smell of the vinegar, but it’s not that bad)

So there you have it! A scalp rub to remove grease, dirt and product buildup. I love this recipe and use it on those days when my hair just doesn’t obey me (you know what I’m talking about..), but I don’t recommend using it often as it does strip your hair and can damage it with continued use. So once a month is fine.

Anti-aging Apple face mask


Today’s recipe is inspired by another from ‘The Holistic Gardener: Beauty Treatments from the Garden’ by Fiann O’Nuallain, with an added twist (Check out my other try at one of his recipes). This face mask uses apple pectin which is known for its anti-aging properties. A marvel in the homeopathic world, Pectin has been linked with preventing the spread of cancers, assisting in weight loss (as an appetite-suppressant) and de-toxifying the body. Well, how do ya like them apples, eh? In my rendition of the recipe, I added 1 tsp turmeric which is a fantastic anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Anything that makes my skin feel soft and clean is good in my books. So let’s get started then!

Ingredients: DSCN3544

  • 1 medium Apple
  • 2 tbsp Honey
  • 3 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar (you can tell I love it when there’s barely any left.. oops)
  • 1 tsp Tumeric
  • Flour to thicken (optional, I used about 2 tbsp white rice flour)


  1. Core the apple and slice into wedges (A handy tip is to use an apple corer that does both, like this one). Do not peel the apple, as the skin contains the pectin!
  2. Blitz the apple wedges, honey, apple cider vinegar and turmeric in a blender until a paste begins to form
  3. Thicken with flour, if you like, until you get a nice consistency (I like ’em thick)
  4. Apply to your face and allow to dry for about 15-30 minutes
  5. Wash off with warm water and pat skin dry to reveal baby soft suppleness 😉

Rose petal & Cucumber face mask

roseandcucumeI found this recipe in Fiann O’ Nuallain‘s book ‘The Holistic Gardener: Beauty Treatments from the Garden’ on page 110 and fell in love. This book.. is.. amazing. I got it as a present from my cousin and have been consulting it for every beauty issue I have, and I really recommend it for any newbies to DIY beauty or people who just do it for fun, like me.

Anyway, so this recipe is a toning face mask which uses panthenoic acid, cucurbitacin, cucumerin which hydrate skin, yoghurt which balances the skin’s natural pH and rose petals to cleanse, soothe and stimulate your skin cells. Good for those with normal, combination, sensitive, dry and oily skin.. an all-round winner in my books!


  • Rose petals of 1 flower (about a cup)
  • 80g cucumber (Roughly 10 slices)
  • 80g natural yoghurt
  • Some of your preferred flour to thicken (optional)


  1. Blend the petals, cucumber and yoghurt into a pulp
  2. Add flour to thicken if you like (I used some white rice flour to make a paste)
  3. Apply to face and leave on for 15 minutes, or until dry
  4. Rinse off with warm water and feel how smooth and baby-soft your skin now is 😀

30 Day Challenge

It’s almost summer and you know what that means – bikini season! Everyone is in a mad rush to get their beach bodies after the weather we’ve had here in Ireland. So I’ve put together a generic 30 day challenge calendar for you (below the paragraph). Just print it out and pencil in what you want to get done in 30 days – be it a healthy diet plan or a workout plan, use it how you will. I’ve made my own 30 day slim down challenge for holidays as I’m going to Spain on May 3rd 🙂 Almost done, I’m on week 4!

If you don’t know where to start then listen up; here are some tips to setting up a plan:

  1.  Focus on what you want to achieve  eg. slimmer thighs
  2. Plan the calendar around this. You can split the days up into sections, so Monday is for Abs, Tuesday is for thighs etc., or you can keep it focused on one area. For example, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday you do a lower ab workout, and then on Thursday, Friday and Saturday you do an upper ab workout with a rest on Sunday. It’s up to you!
  3. Small goals do not mean small outcomes! Making small, achievable goals often is more beneficial as you are not faced with a massive challenge and you can see your progress very quickly. Reviewing your goals and achievements at the end of each week can really help you along
  4. Bust out the old gym equipment If you have equipment eg. dumbbells, yoga mat, a resistance band, work them into your routine. A lot of routines can be improved by adding weights etc., and if you’ve got them lying around the house then why not use them?
  5. Don’t make up your own moves Using the wrong form can hurt your body and even damage your back, so please follow workouts designed by professionals. There are so many great YouTube trainers out there so there should be no excuse for this. I worship Cassey Ho from Blogilates and have been using her videos for years now, definitely one to follow
  6. Try to get rid of any interruptions If you know that you won’t be able to get to the gym one of the days (in advance), please try to plan ahead and find another way of getting your workout done. The same goes for those of you working out at home, if you know that you’ll have visitors on one of the days or something, try to find a way to reduce the interruption by maybe working out early that morning or late that night
